About Babunya: The Heart Behind the Spice
Babunya’s Gourmet Spice was inspired by my mom, Janina Kostiw — lovingly known in our family as “Baba,” short for Babunya, which means Grandmother in Ukrainian. She was born in the western part of Ukraine on May 5, 1926.
From about the age of two, she was raised in Brazil, where she grew up surrounded by family and tradition. The seasoning blend she used throughout her life was passed down from her mother and grandmother, combining Ukrainian heritage with the local spices and ingredients available in rural Brazil.
Raised on a farm at the edge of the jungle, life required resourcefulness. There were no quick trips to the store for milk, bread, or butter. Everything was made from scratch. Meals were prepared with what the land provided, and seasonings were blended carefully by hand. That spirit of simplicity, resilience, and homemade quality lives on in every bottle of Babunya’s Gourmet Spice.
